School isn’t for everyone and after high school, you have a huge decision to make. Personally, I had no idea what I wanted to do when I graduated. I was working a full-time job I wasn’t enjoying and needed a change.
Travelling wherever you decide to go is an amazing experience to get out of your bubble and make friendships that can last a lifetime.
Deciding what you want to do after high school is extremely difficult. Picking a college or university which is supposed to determine your career is stressful, to say the least. Some know what they want to do as a career in high school and kudos to them. Personally, I had no idea what I wanted to do.
While working a job I wasn’t enjoying not knowing where to go for postsecondary I decided to take a leap. Buying a plane ticket to Sydney, Australia and not looking back. The only plan was to spend the first week at Wake Up with Ultimate OZ.
It’s an incredible experience where you can meet like-minded individuals and get a taste for what the city has to offer. At Ultimate OZ they helped with meeting like-minded travellers, finding employment and accommodation past a hostel.
On my first day in Sydney, I was staying in Wake Up Hostel, I had woken up at 5 am with no plan. I decided to go for a run, I knew if I ran East I’d eventually make it to the beach. This was not my brightest idea it was a 7.5 km trek one way. I made the run/ walk there and back, after tired it was time for a nap.
Woken up by a fellow backpacker who had just arrived and was very apologetic for waking me. This could have been handled in two ways. I could have grunted “keep it down” and went back to sleep. Instead, I rolled out of bed and welcomed my fellow traveller. This made for a memorable afternoon. We went up the Sydney Tower, randomly got interviewed by a YouTuber at the Opera House and finished the evening off with the harbour bridge climb at sunset.
Living in Sydney was amazing, the city has a lot to offer. The countless number of beaches, the incredible locals and wild nightlife.
The beaches in Sydney are breathtaking, the natural rock pools and parks with electric BBQs. Everyone always talks about the iconic beach Bondi but forgets about the northern beaches. They aren’t as busy and are accessible by bus from the city. They start at Manly and stretch to Palm beach. My first experience at Manly beach was with a local contractor I was working for, who has become a great friend of mine. He asked me if I knew how it got its name? Before I was able to Google the answer he had the punchline. “The name Manly was given because when the British settlers first came to the beach the Natives were on the beach and believed to be very manly.”
From my experiences, I learned not to be afraid to just say hello. This resulting in meeting some incredible people and some amazing friendships. The most interesting person I met from just introducing myself was Peter Travis who was the designer of the Speedo.
While travelling there are opportunities to learn about yourself and learn from others. Do not be afraid to step out of your bubble. Finally, have a flexible plan, it is nice to have a plan but what happens when things don’t go your way. It can ruin your day when things do not go your way. Be flexible and do not let the little things ruin your experience.
